You cannot quick a dog with a grinder. That is the entire reason to own one.

The problem

Clippers take the nail off in one cut. If you misjudge it by two millimetres you hit the quick — the blood vessel inside the nail — and it hurts, it bleeds, and your dog remembers. One bad experience is usually enough that they never willingly give you a paw again.

So most owners stop trying, the nails get too long, and the dog's posture and gait suffer for it.

The solution

A grinder files the nail down a little at a time. You can stop at any point, check, and carry on — there is no single irreversible cut. That turns nail trimming from a nerve-racking job into a boring one, which is exactly what you want.

It is also quiet, which matters more than the specification suggests: noise is the main reason dogs object to grinders at all.

Why owners choose it

  • Gradual, not a single cut — stop and check as often as you like
  • Low-noise motor, the thing that decides whether your dog tolerates it
  • Two speeds — slower for thin nails and nervous dogs, faster for thick ones
  • Cordless and USB rechargeable, so you can work wherever your dog is calm
  • Suits small, medium and large dogs, and cats

How to know when to stop

Look at the cut end of the nail as you go. On pale nails you can see the pink quick through the nail and should stop well before it. On black nails you cannot — instead, grind a little and look at the end face: when a small grey or pale circle appears in the centre, you are close to the quick. Stop there.

Little and often beats one long session. Once a week for thirty seconds a paw keeps nails where they should be.

Shipping — please read

This has a built-in lithium battery, so it cannot travel on an ordinary air service. It ships on a battery-certified line and takes around three weeks, unlike most of our grooming range which arrives in about a week.

If you need something sooner, our 4-in-1 clipper kit includes a nail grinder head and ships from the US warehouse in about 7 days.

Questions

Grinder or clippers?
Grinder, if you are at all nervous or your dog has black nails you cannot see the quick through. Clippers are faster once you are confident.

Will my dog tolerate the noise?
Run it switched on near them without touching them, several times over a few days, before you go anywhere near a paw. That five minutes is the whole trick.

How long does a charge last?
Long enough for several sessions. Charge it by USB between trims.

Can I use it on a cat?
Yes, on the low speed — though cats generally have less patience for it than dogs.

Shipping

Standard shipping is $8, or free on orders over $70. Express is $15.

Most of our range ships tracked from a US warehouse and arrives in about 8 days, plus 1-2 business days to process your order before it leaves.

The one exception is the LED Safety Harness. Its built-in lithium battery cannot travel on an ordinary air service, so it ships on a battery-certified line and takes around three weeks. That is stated on its own page too.

Sizing

Measure your dog's chest girth at the widest point, just behind the front legs. For collars, measure the neck and leave two fingers of room.

If your dog falls between two sizes, take the larger one. Our harnesses adjust down further than they adjust up.

Not every product is sized - leashes, bowls and toys are one-size.
