The problem

Flat beds ignore how dogs settle. Watch one go to sleep and they curl, then push their head and spine against something. On a flat mat there is nothing to push against, so they end up half on the bed and half on your floor — or back on the sofa.

The solution

A bolstered rim around the edge gives a dog something to lean into and rest a head on. That is what makes a bed get used rather than walked past. The centre is soft plush over PP cotton filling, and the whole thing goes in the washing machine — which matters more than any other feature, because a bed you cannot wash becomes a bed you throw away.

Size honestly — please read before you buy

This is a bed for small dogs, up to about 20 lbs. At 60 × 60 cm a terrier, a dachshund, a chihuahua or a small poodle will curl into it comfortably. A cocker spaniel will overhang it. A labrador will sit on it and flatten it.

We would rather lose the sale than have you order a bed your dog cannot fit in. If your dog is over about 20 lbs, wait — we are looking for a larger bolster bed and will add one when we find a good one.

Questions

Is it orthopaedic or memory foam?
No. It is plush over PP cotton filling — soft and supportive of the head and neck via the rim, but it is not a memory foam orthopaedic bed and we are not going to call it one. For an older dog with joint problems, a foam bed is the better answer.

Can I remove the cover?
The cover does not come off separately — the whole bed goes in the machine. Cold wash, air dry, do not tumble dry.

Will it slide on wood floors?
The Oxford base is designed to grip. On very smooth polished floors, put it against a wall or in a corner.

Will my dog actually use it?
Put it where your dog already chooses to sleep, not where you would like them to. Beds fail because of location far more often than because of the bed.
